Experts in singing, when giving out tips on how to sing, instruct aspirant vocalists to practice deep breathing in the diaphragm instead of the throat while performing, like beginners do. Vocal performances beginning in the throat fades into strangled noise, and this is agonizing. It can only hurt the vocal chords eventually.

Aspirant singers, like most individuals, do not breath deeply enough, which makes it hard to sing properly. The key is to imagine that the sound moves on air that starts from within the diaphragm and moves out of the body. Thus, sing with the sense that the sound proceeds through the throat, not start in it.
